Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State appointed her as Senior Special Assistant on Film and Creative Industry Development. The appointment was announced on Monday in a public service announcement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, alongside 100 other aides across three categories: seven Special Advisers, six Senior Special Assistants, and 88 Special Assistants.

Okonkwo hails from Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State and is best known for her leading role in the Nkoli Nwa Nsukka film series. Veteran actress Eucharia Anunobi was also appointed as Special Assistant on Women Mobilisation for Enugu-North Zone.

Civil servants in Enugu State have reportedly started preparing for auditions. Sources say Okonkwo's first official act was to announce that she would be producing a government-sponsored film about the state's development, and she is looking for "real faces" to fill minor roles. Since then, ministry staff have been practising monologues in their offices, and one director was spotted rehearsing a crying scene in the bathroom. The governor's office has not confirmed the auditions, but Okonkwo has reportedly told her team, "If they can act, they can work."
