In other news, William Troost-Ekong has officially embraced Islam, and he is not doing it halfway.
The former Super Eagles captain recited the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar, where he currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli. The development was reported by Qatari newspaper Al-Arab on Wednesday, September 23, saying the 33-year-old defender "announced his Islam" after pronouncing the two testimonies of faith. A video of the footballer reciting the Shahadah also surfaced online.

Islamic cleric Dr Muhammad Salah shared footage of the former Nigeria captain reciting the testimonies on his verified Facebook account. Another report by Al Jazeera said Troost-Ekong expressed a desire to read more and learn about Islam.
Troost-Ekong joined the Arab region in 2024 when he moved to Saudi Arabia before switching to Al-Ahli in Qatar in January 2026 on a one-and-a-half-year contract. During his international career, he won 83 caps for Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, scoring 8 goals, and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after leading the Super Eagles to the final.

Troost-Ekong has reportedly told friends that he is not just converting; he is planning to become a Chief Imam. Sources say he has already started memorising Quranic verses between training sessions and has been asking his teammates to call him "Imam William." He has also requested a prayer mat with his jersey number on it and is reportedly looking into online Islamic studies programmes. His goal is to be the first former Super Eagles captain to lead Friday prayers in Doha.
